Railway reopenings

Many of us have favourite lines which we'd like to see reopened. But there's a yawning chasm between wishful thinking and a sound business case.

Whilst the Scots and, to a lesser extent, the Welsh have made real progress expanding their networks, the English have been handicapped by the Department for Transport and its lack of strategic vision. Although climate change is pushing the pendulum in rail's direction, eye-watering construction costs obstruct the way forward.

There are dozens of reopening proposals at various stages of development. This page - another work in progress - will check out those which are not just pipe dreams.
